Midweek Rumor: Google To Buy Skype |
![]() Four years after buying Skype for US$2.6 billion, eBay still couldn't find a reasonable way to integrate the telephony service with its auction site, so various sources began speculating Skype's acquisition by search giant Google. At the same time, Skype proved to be a good standalone business, reporting a 26 percent increase in revenue last year. Of course, nothing is official, and this rumor might never materialize. But it's quite interesting to analyze how Google could implement Skype's functionality into its products. The first thing that sprung into my mind is Google Chat, which is popular -- but mainly with Gmail users. |

Pirate Bay file-sharing defended |
![]() The Pirate Bay is the world's most high-profile file-sharing site and is being taken to court by media firms including Sony and Warner Bros. The men face up to two years in prison and a fine of $143,500, if convicted. "File-sharing services can be used both legally and illegally," defence lawyer Per Samuelsson said. Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde Kolmsioppi and Carl Lundstrom have portrayed themselves as digital libertarians and say that they cannot be prosecuted for copyright theft because none of the content is hosted on their computer servers. |

TED on porn, malaria and robots |
Peter Bowes looks around the state-of-the-art 'green' house at TED 2009 Porn as education, robots at war, and retired Microsoft boss Bill Gates' mosquito release were just some of the highlights at the TED conference. TED, the Technology Entertainment Design conference consists of a series of talks given by "big thinkers" discussing "big ideas." It is attended by many of the world's leading scientists, academics and business leaders. Mr Gates' stunt was to drive home the serious message of malaria prevention. With the issue being high on the agenda of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the former software boss told the crowd in Long Beach, California "Not only poor people should experience this." While he asked the audience "How do you stop a deadly disease that is spread by mosquitoes?", Mr Gates also noted that more money is spent finding a cure for baldness than eradicating malaria. |

Judge dismisses Google lawsuit |
![]() "We are pleased the judge agreed the suit was without merit," said Google in a statement to the BBC. Street View displays street level, 360-degree photographs of areas taken by specially equipped Google vehicles. Failure The photographs at the centre of the lawsuit, launched last year, were taken at the foot of Mr and Mrs Boring's driveway and shows their house, a pool area and detached garage. Signs marked the road as private. The suit alleged that Google's Street View had caused Mr and Mrs Boring "mental suffering" and diluted the value of their home. |
