The Good, Bad And Ugly Of BlogRolled

BlogRolled is a brand new service having launched the other day. For bloggers who always wonder how else to make money online can do so with BlogRolled if they wish. In short, BlogRolled monetizes your blogroll and let’s you earn income by doing so. However, it isn’t all just plain sailing, even though on first looks this service seems really cool. I urge you to read this post and make up your own opinion in the end.

The good of BlogRolled

If you are currently blogging without seeing any income from your blog, despite having a good PR, Alexa ranking and RSS subscriber feed, then BlogRolled could be the answer to this problem.

Here is how it works. The following are direct excerpts from their site to explain the service a little more in dept.

As an advertiser:

We have an inventory of publishing sites available to you which you can search, sort through, and find publishers related to your product or service. Once you have found a listing you like, enter the details for your site and then checkout. Within a few business days of making the purchase, the selected publisher will place your ad live on their site.

As a publisher:

Once an advertiser makes a purchase from your listing, you will be notified of the sale. Once you’ve received the notification, you will be asked to place the ad on your site into your blogroll. Done. That’s it!

Because blogrolls are naturally sitting on the home page of every blog, the exposure gained can create some nice attention. Many blogs have the blogroll link on every page of their blog, making it possible to garner site wide links and visuals for those who advertise with them.

It also seems blogrolls gain more benefits than traditional advertising platforms when it comes to search engines and user friendly experiences if we are to look at BlogRolled’s table.

blogrolled benefits

blogrolled in action To get involved with BlogRolled is easy:

Advertisers can:

  • Sign-up
  • Find a listing
  • Place the ad

Publishers can:

  • Sign-up
  • Sell Ads
  • Earn Money!

So what income possibilities are available to bloggers?

According to Gobala Krishnan of EasyWordPress, the pricing structure of BlogRolled is determined by

  1. Alexa rankings
  2. Google PageRank and
  3. RSS subscribers count

If you follow the above link you will see that Gobala’s blog would fetch $140/link per month. This is great money to say the least. Especially if you decide to sell 5 links per month. That would bring the total income to $700/month. Not bad for a little side income.

Given of course your blog has similar stats. But even if you are sitting at a PR 3 with an Alexa count of 200,000 you might be able to rack up some dollars.

The bad of BlogRolled

For starters, one thing I really can’t stand with services like these is the requirements of having to sign up with them before I buy. As an advertiser for example I would love to see the available listings and their costs before I sign up and waste my time for nothing.

Since the service is new, chances are high that there aren’t many listings just yet anyway. But then, I could be wrong of course.

The ugly of BlogRolled

When I saw the launch pop up in my email late last night I was interested to check it out closer. Then today I saw Gobala’s entry and upon closer inspection my alarm bells went off.

I can see this going down the Google drains faster than we can say “I told you so”. The fact remains that Google doesn’t like webmasters to use paid advertising on their sites without the rel=”nofollow” attribute. Buying links to garner search engine placement advancement is definitely a big no no.

While BlogRolled doesn’t exactly do that, they still offer a service that raises eyebrows (mine for sure) and begs the question whether this is actually right by Google’s TOS. This means Google will most likely get wind of this eventually and those who use the services might be penalized for doing so.

Of course I could be totally wrong but to be honest I’m not wanting to find out the hard way. Contextual ads publishers were punished for selling paid ads and those bloggers who used them lost PR late last year.

Loosing PR equals loosing income for sure!

While BlogRolled isn’t contextual advertising, I still think this could spell trouble.

What do you think? Do you feel this could work or are you concerned like me?
