LICOS - Centre for Institutions and Economic Performance invites applications for two PhD scholarships and one post-doctoral fellowship. The positions are in the research programme on “Development and Food Policy”. One of the scholarships will be for research on the political economy of standards and regulation.

PhD Program at the Faculty
The Faculty of Economics and Applied Economics of University of Leuven has an extensive Ph.D. program: about 160 researchers are currently pursuing a Ph.D in Applied Economics/Business studies or a PhD in Economics.   • University degree in economics, agricultural economics or a form of applied economics, preferable at Master level;

The Structural System Laboratory (SSL) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Kunsan National University, has established itself as a leading laboratory in Korea with continuous developments in the relevant engineering researches. In 2006, we have been selected as a BK21 (Brain Korea 21) Research Team by the Korean Government. Through stable financial supports for seven years until 2012, this program aims to make the selected research teams grow as world-leading research groups.

Based on this BK21 grant, we are inviting promising foreign researchers to join our team as a post-doctoral researcher. Monthly stipends will be US $2,150, and which can be positively adjusted depending on forthcoming research contributions. The initial appointment will be for one year (starting September 2007) and can be renewed based on research achievements. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in structural engineering, and excellent skills in English communication (written and verbal) are highly preferred.



We prefer applicants who are able to publish international journal papers ranked as SCI or SCIE during his/her appointment in the laboratory with their own creative research topics. Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of New South Wales, Australia, located near Sydney’s southern beaches. The person appointed will report to Professor Ian Sloan in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and work on a research project that combines mathematical and computational techniques for high-dimensional numerical integration with financial applications. The position is funded by an ARC Linkage grant to UNSW and Macquarie Bank, for the project ‘Novel Mathematical Technologies for Financial Valuation and Risk’. This is a fixed term 2-year position, available from January 19, 2008. The salary (in Australian dollars) is $60,826-65,060 (plus 17% employer superannuation and leave loading),

depending on experience and qualifications.

The main duties are to carry out mathematical analysis and computations for the above project; to liaise with Professor Ian Sloan on priorities and future plans for the research; to liaise with Macquarie Bank Chief Investigators on details of the project; to give oral reports and presentations to groups of Macquarie Bank staff, UNSW co-workers and others; and to prepare reports and papers for publication and conference presentation.



Essential selection criteria: PhD in a relevant discipline; proven research ability, as demonstrated by written research reports and published papers; understanding of quasi-Monte Carlo methods for multivariate problems; understanding of financial mathematics, especially option pricing; understanding of essentials of probability and stochastic processes; good programming skills, and good experience with at least one software system relevant to advanced computation, eg Matlab, C or Fortran; excellent oral and written communication skills. Desirable: Employment experience at the graduate level in a commercial environment.

REMUNERATION

[USA] Postdoctoral Position in Neuronal Cell Signaling, Department of Pharmacology, The University of Iowa

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Pharmacology, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City starting from March, 2008. The laboratory is interested in studying Neuronal Cell Signaling. In particular, projects are aimed at studying the dynamic regulation of expression, trafficking, localization and functions of voltage-gated potassium channels by diverse GPCR signaling pathways in mammalian neurons.

Check Mohapatra & Trimmer, J Neurosci 2006; and Park & Mohapatra et al., Science 2006 to get a broad idea on the future projects. These projects will employ tissue (neuronal) culture, biochemical, proteomic, cell biological, molecular biological, and electrophysiological techniques to answer critical quiestions.



Ph.D. with good knowledge of basic neuroscience is a required qualification. Although experience in atleast 2 or more above-mentioned expertise is expected, candidates with thorough expertise in cell biology, confocal microscopy and imaging will be given preference. You will be allowed and encouraged to learn all the techniques and rational approach used in the laboratory. Excellent support and motivation will be provided for future career advancement. The laboratory will be a well-equipped one with own tissue culture, biochemical, molecular biological and some imaging and good electrophysiological facilities.

The University of Iowa, College of Medicine has excellent central core research facilities (Genomic, Proteomic, Imaging, and Gene-targeting cores) at the disposal for rapid advancement of research projects.

The Center for Quantum Spacetime (CQUeST) invites application for research fellow positions in strings, fields, and related areas.CQUeST was launched in June 2005 at Sogang University in Seoul with a long term grant from the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation. The starting date of the appointment is negotiable and can be as early as October 1st 2007. The initial appointment will be for two years with a possibility of renewal for one more year. Two PhD-researchers on heritage formation in colonial and postcolonial Indonesia and the Netherlands

Faculty of Arts, Department of History

Political history, cultural history and global history are three main foci of the Department of History”s contemporary research programme. The section of Political History focuses on issues of nationbuilding, citizenship and political culture in its relationship to processes of signification, inclusion and exclusion. Histories of colonialism and decolonisation are important in this respect.

Research project

Within the broader context of the NWO-programme on Cultural Dynamics two PhD-posts have been formulated for the research programme Sites, Bodies and Stories. The Dynamics of Heritage Formation in Colonial and Postcolonial Indonesia and the Netherlands. These are:

  1. Physical Anthropology, Colonial Practice and Cultural Policies;
  2. Performing identity, Shaping Heritage – Wayang puppet theatre and the dynamics of heritage formation in contemporary Indonesia.

Both PhD researchers are supposed to develop the research questions formulated in the Sites, Bodies and Stories outline, and push these further. These are leading questions, which have been drafted for a collaborative project with many stakeholders involved. Interdisciplinary collaboration and sharing of research results will be at stake in each phase of the progamme. Research will take place within the context of the new VU research institute on Heritage, Urban Landscapes and Cultural Environments CLUE.

  • Research MA or double MA in history and/or other relevant academic disciplines;
  • solid working knowledge on Indonesian history, culture and contemporary society;
  • experience with sources and academic practices in Dutch colonialism;
  • conceptual approach to tangible and intangible heritage and experience with the representation of culture in museums or academic institutions like laboratories;
  • experience with research outside the Netherlands, preferably in Indonesia. Basic knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is an advantage;
  • experience with collection databases and international communication through digital platforms.
